Should I Stop Watching Netflix?
Netflix is popular. Most of my friends watch shows and movies on it. Netflix has even started creating their own original shows and movies that have become pretty famous such as Stranger Things and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. I spend a lot of time on Netflix. If you are a close friend, you know that I can be found binge watching shows over long breaks and occasionally on weekends. Do I have an unhealthy addiction?
On average, I watch an episode a day, which is about 40 minutes. There are some days I don’t watch it at all. When I’m not busy, I sometimes let Netflix continue to the next episode. This can lead me to watching three or four episodes in a row and before I know it, it’s almost time for bed. I’m told all the time that I shouldn’t spend so much time watching tv and that I could use that time much more productively. I could be doing homework or learning to play a new instrument. Instead, I spend my time on Netflix. I sometimes try and convince myself to read a book instead of watching Netflix because there are so many books I want to read this year, but there is a certain level of stress relief that I get from Netflix that I don’t get while reading. I love reading in my free time, but after a challenging day, I like to watch Netflix to let me unwind my mind.
I admit that it’s unproductive, but it does help me relax and prevents me from feeling too overwhelmed. Also, there is a social side to it. My friends and I are often talking about a show we are all watching or a movie we want to watch. Also, you could meet a complete stranger and hit it off because you both watch and love the same show. Watching Netflix is worthwhile. I’m convinced that I should stop myself at one episode per day (especially after reading articles about how binge watching Netflix too much basically turns your brain to mush), but I don’t think I need to stop watching Netflix altogether. After a long day, everyone should take some time to rest. I choose to do this by watching an episode of Netflix.
DO NOT STOP WATCHING NETFLIX!! Netflix is honestly the best stress reliever in the entire world, it's literally the best way to relax after an EXHAUSTING school day. There's also a large variety of shows on Netflix and it is always super fun to try out new shows. You have an endless collection of shows and movies at your fingertips, so I mean it doesn't get better than that! So yeah, keep watching Netflix, it's good for you :)
ReplyDeleteHumans need some relaxation time to remain sane. I would strongly recommend continuing to do the things that you do, even if they are slightly unproductive sometimes. Also! Shitty life pro tip... Turn off the sound and turn on subtitles so then instead of just watching, you are reading which is healthy and good and yea.
ReplyDeleteNo one can work 24/7. As much as our parents wish, it's too strenuous for someone to spend every second working or doing something productive. A break can really help and increase productivity. If Netflix is your way of relaxation then so be it. And I'm sure you don't spend THAT much time watching Netflix. As you mentioned, you sometimes don't even watch Netflix for a day or two. Maybe your friends are just really like teasing you over Netflix. ;)
ReplyDeleteI heard that when you watch TV you use less of your brain than when you're sleeping. I honestly doubt it's true but watching TV is way more fun than sleeping so I don't care anyway. I think you're right though in that we all need some way to destress. Just because it isn't productive doesn't mean it's a waste of time. Relaxing is a very good use of time as well!
ReplyDeleteNetflix and television in general have a bad reputation, because it is the favoured entertainment of lazy people, but watching Netflix does not necessarily indicate laziness. If you still get your work done and you still turn occasionally to other forms of entertainment, then it is not a problem. As for an addiction as you elude to in your first paragraph? I have not read any articles on the subject, but I would guess that it isn't an actual addiction, at least not for someone who only averages 40 minutes per day. It is just a good way to untangle the mess of residual thoughts that lingers after a long day of intense thinking.
ReplyDeleteI'm not gonna suggest whether you should stop watching Netflix or not. However, if you choose to stop, you NEED to find something else that serves as a stress reliever. At this school, if you don't have a form of stress relief, you will turn into a tension filled ball of stress. Don't be a tension filled ball of stress.
